Our Story

Historic Roosevelt Elementary is located in Roosevelt Heights on the East side of Tacoma, Washington.  Built in 1921, the original building was a three-story brick structure. In 1972 there was an addition to existing site when a fire devastated Tayet School located behind Lister Elementary.  The classrooms were relocated to the Roosevelt School site. The school was rebuilt in 1987 with some of the original stonework included in the replicas of the entrances.

A special painting of Roosevelt Elementary hangs in our main office.  Painted by former student , Peter Romer, it depicts the school in 1955 when the artist attended the school as an immigrant from Germany.  The painting was created in Mr. Romer's studio in Germany and presented to the Roosevelt community in 1987.
